Day 1 – Tuesday – February 14

More than 500 people from 36 countries came together to think about and collaborate on how blockchain will enable a revolution in the energy sector at a beautiful venue, Hofburg Palace in Vienna.

A warm welcome and opening remarks were given by Michael Hübner of the Ministry of Transport, Innovation and Technology, Ulrike Huemer from the City of Vienna and Ewald Hesse, the CEO and Co-Founder of Grid Singularity. Christoph Burger, a senior lecturer and senior associate Dean of Executive Education ESMT Berlin started the event with a very interesting statistics. The first keynote speaker was Dr. Christoph Frei, the Secretary General at the World Energy Council who described blockchain as the missing link in energy system. Electricity was described as the new oil and it was noted that it is often underestimated the speed of development of solar and wind energy.

Vitalik Buterin gave a keynote speech where he discussed blockchain and energy and outlined his view on the meaning of decentralization and his classification of it.

Dr. Gavin Wood, Heiko Hees, Christoph Jentzsch and Ewald Hesse held a fantastic fireside discussion introducing and clarifying many of the confusing aspects of blockchain technology.

Dr. Amory B. Lovins, Co-Founder, Chief Scientist and Chairman Emeritus of the Rocky Mountain Institute participated through a video message and announced that there are very exciting changes that are happening in the energy sector and that blockchain will be a key enabler of the future. An audience poll revealed that 48% of the audience agreed with this sentiment but had as yet not found the best use case to explore.

Dr. Herve Touati, managing director of the Rocky Mountain Institute had a major announcement launching the Energy Web Foundation. This non-profit foundation will attempt to be the vehicle for the energy sector to explore the impact of blockchain collectively.

After the food mining break, there was a panel discussion for the energy sector. A poll showed 59% of the audience thought that the new technology will reduce the energy cost. Christoph Jentzsch, CEO and Founder of slock.it, in particular explained how blockchain enabled autonomous agents and the economy of things.

The regulation panel discussed the future of regulation including avoiding over regulation. Eva Kaili, a member of European Parliament, mentioned that the first part of legislation to be passed around the end of the year.

An exciting day of blockchain and energy ended with an Austrian craft beer with music at Babenberger Passage.

Day 2 – Tuesday – February 15

Day 2 focused on the many exciting companies in the blockchain space who presented their businesses and ideas to the audience.

There are a growing number of use cases in development across the energy sector including: peer to peer energy trading, the sharing of our connected devices, the use of digital currencies to record energy production and enable local markets and facilitating access to energy.

The audience was asked to vote on the favourite start-up pitch and the winner of the first EventHorizon start-up award was OneUp.

OneUp acts as a bridge between large enterprises and start-ups through a structured approach, founder Mark Dijksman calls ‘Startup Thinking’.

A panel of investors gave some unique insights into how to attract funding. Have a robust technology roadmap, be transparent about strengths and be clear on your strategy and timeframes for growth.

The two days until now were focused on the opportunity of blockchain and the promise. But there was also the chance to discuss the important topic of security. Our connected devices are potentially unsecure and exist in hostile environments. Security must be shifted from a feature to a requirement.

The closing was marked by a fantastic drummer experience.
